Why MG-LZ8™ Is Unlike Any Reishi Supplement You’ve Tried Before

THE MUSHROOM OF IMMORTALITY — PROPERLY EXTRACTED
Tested by five independent laboratories. Grown in the Cape. Backed by 32 years of expertise.
You’ve probably heard of reishi. You may have already tried it. But if you took a capsule of powdered reishi mushroom and didn’t notice much, there’s a good reason: most reishi supplements on the market aren’t what they claim to be.
A 2017 independent audit of 19 commercially available reishi products found that only 5 of the 19 actually matched their labels. The rest were either bulked up with grain starch, made from spent biomass (material that had already been processed for its active compounds and then dried and re-sold), or simply too poorly extracted to deliver any meaningful benefit.
MG-LZ8™ was built as a direct response to this problem. It is made differently, grown differently and tested more thoroughly than virtually anything else available in South Africa — or globally.
What Reishi Actually Does in Your Body
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has been used in Eastern medicine for over two thousand years. Modern science has spent decades confirming what traditional practitioners long observed, and the research is now substantial.
What makes reishi genuinely useful is that it works with your immune system rather than simply pushing it into overdrive. Its active compounds — beta-glucans and ganoderic acids — are regulatory: they can increase immune activity when your system is depleted, and calm it when it is overreacting. This makes it an adaptogen in the truest sense.
Documented benefits from peer-reviewed research include:
- Immune system regulation and long-term immune resilience
- Liver and kidney protection and support
- Blood sugar stabilisation and healthier glucose metabolism
- Cholesterol management and cardiovascular support
- Natural stress and cortisol regulation — without artificial stimulation
- Better sleep quality and nervous system balance
- Cognitive support and mental clarity, particularly relevant as we age
- Respiratory health and seasonal wellness

The key word is ‘regulatory’. Reishi doesn’t just push your immune system to work harder — it helps it work smarter. That’s a meaningful distinction for anyone dealing with inflammation, autoimmune tendencies or chronic fatigue. |
The Problem With Most Reishi on the Market
Before you can understand what makes MG-LZ8™ different, it helps to understand what the supplement industry has been getting wrong.
Problem 1: Grain filler masquerading as mushroom
Many manufacturers grow reishi mycelium (the root-like structure of the fungus) on a grain substrate — usually rice or oats. Instead of separating the fungal material from the grain, they simply grind the whole thing together and encapsulate it. The result is a product that is largely grain starch with a small amount of mushroom material. The 2017 audit found grain starch in 68% of tested products.
Problem 2: Incomplete extraction
Reishi contains two completely different groups of active compounds. The first group — ganoderic acids and triterpenoids — are fat-soluble, meaning they dissolve in alcohol but not in water. The second group — beta-glucans, polysaccharides and the LZ-8 immune protein — are water-soluble and require hot water extraction. Most products use one method or the other. Either way, you’re only getting half the benefit.
Problem 3: Spent biomass
Some raw material in the supplement market comes from mushrooms that have already been commercially processed — the active compounds extracted, the remainder dried, powdered and re-sold as ‘reishi powder’. It looks identical to genuine mushroom powder. Without laboratory analysis, there is no way to tell the difference.
How MG-LZ8™ Is Built Differently
It starts with a different mushroom
The reishi most people have seen in supplements is grown as a flat cap called a conk — the classic bracket mushroom shape. Mushroom Guru grows something different: a 35–40cm straight antler form, achieved by carefully controlling the CO₂ and oxygen levels in the growing environment.
This isn’t just aesthetics. When CO₂ levels are elevated, reishi activates what you might call its ‘exploration mode’ — it grows upward, concentrating all its biological energy into the developing tips rather than spreading it across a broad cap. A 2018 peer-reviewed study confirmed that antler-type fruiting bodies contain approximately twice the concentration of active compounds compared to standard cap-shaped reishi.
Independent laboratory analysis found approximately 12 times the triterpenoid content in the antler material compared to standard commercial reishi — before a single extraction step has even taken place.
It uses a dual-phase extraction — the only approach that captures everything
Craig Fourie, who has cultivated mushrooms for over 32 years and spent 13 of those years refining MG-LZ8™, developed a proprietary process that runs both an ethanolic extraction phase and a hot water extraction phase, then combines both outputs into a single finished extract.
This is the only way to capture the full spectrum of reishi’s active compounds. The process also removes the chitin cell wall — the tough, indigestible shell that surrounds mushroom cells and prevents most of the active material in raw powder from being absorbed.
The result: extraordinary concentration

|
348× |
more concentrated than standard imported reishi powder |
|
5,400mg |
of standard reishi powder equivalent in every single 15mg capsule |
|
48.8% |
higher total compound content than the NAMMEX international quality benchmark in direct comparison |
That 348× figure comes from two multipliers working together: the antler form’s roughly 12× higher triterpenoid content, combined with a 29× extraction concentration factor confirmed by independent HPLC analysis. One small capsule delivers what would take a very large handful of standard reishi powder to match — if that powder were even genuine.
The LZ-8 Protein: Reishi’s Secret Weapon
Inside reishi there is a small immunomodulatory protein called LZ-8. It is found only in reishi — no other mushroom contains it. What makes it remarkable is its shape: part of it looks structurally similar to a human antibody.
That similarity means LZ-8 can communicate directly with your immune cells using a molecular language your body already recognises. Rather than forcing an immune response, it restores natural communication pathways that modern diets, stress and environmental toxins tend to compromise over time.
MG-LZ8™ also contains five of the eight essential glyconutrients your immune cells need to communicate properly: glucose, mannose, galactose, fucose and xylose. Most people only get two of these from their everyday diet.
What Five Independent Laboratories Found
MG-LZ8™ has been tested by independent laboratories over eight years. Here is what the evidence shows:
Species confirmed — twice
Inqaba Biotechnical Industries (Pretoria, 2025) used dual-marker molecular identification — the gold standard for mushroom species verification. Result: 99.69% identity to Ganoderma sichuanense (the authentic reishi species) on one marker and 100% identity on the second. This cannot be faked or approximated.
No grain filler whatsoever
SANAS-accredited laboratory Mérieux NutriSciences tested MG-LZ8™ for starch and found less than 0.50g per 100g — below the detection limit. Real reishi mushroom contains no starch. This single result confirms there is no grain substrate in the product.
Heavy metals: well within safe limits
Verve Dynamics tested MG-LZ8™ for heavy metals in October 2023. Lead was 17 times below the international safety limit. Cadmium was 55 times below the limit. Mercury was 50 times below the limit. Arsenic was undetectable. This matters because mushrooms are natural accumulators — they absorb whatever is present in their growing environment, including heavy metals from contaminated soil or water.
It actually activates your immune system
In 2018, MG-LZ8™ was submitted to Prof. Vaclav Větvicka at the University of Louisville in Kentucky — one of the world’s leading researchers on beta-glucans and immune function, with over 250 peer-reviewed publications to his name.

Results: At the test dose, active neutrophils (the immune cells that engulf and destroy harmful material) increased by 52% within 24 hours. A key immune signalling molecule rose more than 200-fold. No toxic effects on cells were found at any dose. |
Prof. Větvicka’s conclusion: “MG-LZ8™ is a biologically active sample with significant effects on immune reactions and showed no toxic effects on cells.”
Better than the international benchmark
Direct mass spectrometry comparison at Stellenbosch University’s Central Analytical Facility tested MG-LZ8™ against NAMMEX — the internationally recognised standard for reishi extract quality. MG-LZ8™ came out 48.8% higher in total compound content across all identified compounds.

Who Should Consider MG-LZ8™
MG-LZ8™ is not a quick fix. It is a long-term foundation supplement for people who take their health seriously. It is particularly well suited to:
- Anyone looking to build genuine immune resilience rather than simply reacting to illness
- People dealing with chronic stress, fatigue or burnout who want natural cortisol support
- Those with liver health concerns or on long-term medication affecting liver function
- Anyone managing blood sugar, cholesterol or blood pressure alongside lifestyle changes
- People in recovery — from illness, surgery or intensive treatment — who want to support the body’s own restoration process
- Those who have tried reishi before and noticed little effect (the most likely explanation is product quality, not the mushroom itself)
Important: Who Should Not Take MG-LZ8™
MG-LZ8™ is a food supplement, not a medicine. However, because it has real immune-modulating and mild blood-thinning effects, there are situations where you should not take it or should check with your doctor first.
Do not take if you are on:
- Blood-thinning medication (warfarin, heparin or newer anticoagulants)
- Immunosuppressive drugs for an autoimmune condition
- Anti-rejection medication following an organ transplant
Do not take if you are:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Known to be allergic to reishi mushrooms
Check with your doctor first if you have:
- Severe liver impairment (liver enzymes above three times normal)
- Severe kidney impairment (kidney function below 30%)
No serious adverse effects have been reported in commercial use to date.
The Bottom Line
Reishi is one of the most researched medicinal mushrooms in the world. The problem has never been the science — it has been the quality of what’s actually in the bottle.
MG-LZ8™ is the most thoroughly documented reishi extract available in South Africa. It is grown differently, extracted completely and tested independently across every dimension that matters: species identity, compound content, biological activity, grain-free purity and heavy metal safety.
